Phase I
Phase I is a water soluble source of a highly selected viable strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus with proven probiotic properties together with nutraceutical compounds that promote gut health, delivered to poultry via drinking water lines.
Our strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus was selected for inclusion in Phase I following comparison with microbials throughout the world sourced from universities and commercial research laboratories. It was found to meet or exceed all the major selection criteria essential for Lactobacillus acidophilus when used as a performance enhancer.
The intestinal tract of poultry is the site of nutrient digestion and absorption. It is also the site for colonization by both beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms. The microbial balance determines the host animal’s health status.
In healthy birds, lactobacilli dominate the intestine with a population of >100,000 cfu/g and successfully suppress pathogenic activity. Changes in this balance of microbial composition often occur and represent a major cause of digestive disturbance and the overall health and productivity of the bird. In addition, therapeutic or preventative treatment of flocks with antibiotics or other drugs may remove all the microbes in the intestine and create a temporarily sterile digestive tract. Birds are extremely vulnerable to invasion by pathogenic organisms immediately after such therapeutic treatment.
It has been shown that supplementing poultry with certain strains of lactobacilli can help them to resist stress and post-antibiotic problems. The strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus chosen for Phase I was specifically selected for its positive attributes in this area, including rapid growth of the Lactobacillus to ensure domination of the intestinal microflora.
This elite strain of Lactobacillus is blended on a highly specified form of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) which acts as a rapidly water soluble prebiotic. A prebiotic, or nutraceutical is a non-digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or more limited number of bacteria in the colon, that can improve the host health. Monogastrics do not have the enzymes to break down FOS so it passes on to the colon. In the colon, beneficial bacteria will breakdown the
- FOS to be used as food thereby stimulating their growth.
- FOS can be used by beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Enterococcus spp.
- FOS cannot be used by Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Clostridium spp.
Research in Poultry has shown an increase in Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus of 3 - 4 x with a consequent reduction in pH. This resulted in the observed reduction in Campylobacter, and Salmonella levels.
Trials in Broilers showed:
- Improved Feed Efficiency
- Reduction in carcass fat
- Improved dressing percentage
- Improved body weight gain
Phase I is provided as a wholly water soluble formulation to facilitate delivery via poultry water lines. The product can be used to make up a working solution that can be accurately metered into the water to deliver the precise dose for the age of the bird. Each 50g dose of Phase I powder is sufficient to treat 1000 birds.
Phase I is packaged in 20 dose, 1.0 kg jars.
Phase I is packaged in 80 dose, 4.0 kg pails.
Phase I contains a viable source of Lactobacillus acidophilus that must be alive to work. Phase I should be stored in a cool, dry place in it’s original packaging to ensure maximum viability.
