AFIA SF/SF: American Feed Industry Association Safe Feed/Safe Food Certification

“The Safe Feed/Safe Food Certification Program is a voluntary, third-party-certified initiative designed for feed mills and feed- and ingredient-related facilities in the United States and Canada. The program establishes comprehensive standards of excellence that go beyond existing regulations to show leadership and maximize food and feed safety. Communicating food safety risks to the industry, building consensus among the segments of the industry, continuing the education process and enhancing consumer confidence in the feed and food supply are all important aspects of the program.”

The Safe Feed/Safe Food program builds on many of the same principles present in the ISO system, but its approach is on ensuring the safety of the nation’s feed supply. The Safe Feed/Safe Food program again calls for documented procedures to be in place, and for workers to be adequately trained in their jobs to reduce the likelihood of the introduction of chemical, biological or physical hazards into the feed system. This program focuses more heavily on the planning and monitoring of the physical plant and infrastructure than does ISO, but it also requires the same controls on suppliers and material identification and traceability throughout the production process.

Like the ISO certification, the Safe Feed/Safe Food certification is on the facility itself, rather than a certification of individual products.

The AFIA has just recently launched an International Safe Feed/Safe Food program, which Micron intends to join in 2011.
